Football Programme

New Plymouth Boys’ High School is a proud football school with a long history of competing with some of the best schools in New Zealand. The school is a registered club and the boys get the opportunity to play in the local competition against other schools and clubs.

Teams, Seasons and Competitions
The Teams

The school has a very strong football programme, with 12 football teams. The teams cater to players of all abilities. Our premier teams are the 1st XI Football and the U15 side. These teams compete at the national level in week-long tournaments in September.

The Season

Preseason work starts January and continues into Term 1 where team selections will occur around the end of February. The season starts in late March and concludes in the first week in early September with the National Tournament. Players who want the option to be selected for a premier team, needs to ensure they are here until the end of the season in September.

Competitions

The 1st XI plays in the local Senior men’s competition on a Saturday afternoon from March until August. The school also arranges inter-school games against some of the best footballing school sides in New Zealand. This involves the team travelling midweek to play teams in cities like Auckland/Wellington/Hamilton and Palmerston North or they travel to us.

The team also plays in two tournaments, the Super 8 tournament for three days in July and the National tournament for five days in September.

The Under 15 team and 2nd XI Football also play in tournaments in September against other schools.

Staff, Football Class and Futsal
Staff

Mick Curry - Head Coach and Football Director

The school employs a Football Director with UEFA B qualifications with the English FA. He is currently doing an A licence. He is also the coach for the New Zealand Secondary Schools Under 15 International side. The Football Director coaches the 1st XI and oversees the football programme within the school. This is an indication of the importance of Football within the school, as the school employs him in the role to oversee football.

Football Class

At Year 9 and 10 (ages 13-14), the school provides a timetabled class of football during the normal school day. Students are selected to attend this class and have a specialist football coach taking them through football skills and fitness and conditioning training about being a performance athlete.

Futsal

At New Plymouth Boys’ High School, we run a comprehensive Futsal program. This ranges from a social league whereby the boys enter their own team to a First team and Junior A team which both compete at the National Secondary Schools Futsal tournament in Wellington during the week starting the 18th March. The futsal season then restarts at the beginning of Term 4 (October). Our Football Director holds a NZF C licence in Futsal coaching.

Player Transfer

There is a process getting you transferred from home club to New Zealand. (A FIFA requirement) If you want to play competitively, we will need you to start completing these forms before you leave home.  This will be the situation in any school in New Zealand.  Students without international clearance cannot play in weekly Saturday competitions until clearance has been granted.

You are able for selection in midweek inter-school games as well as the National and Super 8 tournaments if selected.
